Moisture-Corroded LiftMaster Board Replaced, Solar System Resized

Corrosion on the control board had killed the operator — and the solar system was never big enough to keep the batteries charged in the first place.

The problem

A double farm gate at the end of a long rural driveway had stopped responding. The operator was a solar-powered LiftMaster running off a battery bank, and the owner had noticed it getting less reliable for some time before it stopped altogether — slower to open, occasionally refusing the second cycle, and worse first thing in the morning.

That pattern matters, because it is the signature of a power problem rather than a dead motor, and it had been developing long before the day the gate finally stopped.

How we diagnosed it

  1. Opening the enclosure showed the cause immediately: moisture had been getting into the housing, and the control board carried visible corrosion. Once water reaches a board it does not fail cleanly — it fails intermittently first, as corrosion creeps across terminals and traces, which is exactly the slow decline the owner had described.
  2. The board was beyond salvaging. But replacing it alone would have been treating half the fault.
  3. Testing the power side showed the solar installation had never been large enough for this gate. The panel could not put back what a heavy double gate on a rural driveway takes out per cycle, so the batteries had been running in a permanent state of partial charge. On a lead-acid battery that is not just an inconvenience: chronic undercharging shortens battery life and leaves the operator working at low voltage, which stresses the very electronics that had just failed.

What we did

  1. We replaced the control board and resealed the enclosure so the new one is not going the same way as the old one. A board fitted into a housing that still lets water in is a repair with an expiry date.
  2. We then installed an additional solar system sized to what this gate actually draws, so the batteries reach full charge rather than hovering permanently below it.

The outcome

The gate runs normally again, and the power system behind it is now sized for the load rather than running at a permanent deficit.

What you should take from this

Two faults were in play here and only one of them was visible. Replacing a corroded board is the obvious repair, and on its own it would have looked like a fix for a while — but the undersized solar array that had been stressing the electronics would still have been there, quietly working on the new board. Diagnosing the power system is what turns this from a repeat call-out into a repair.
