LiftMaster LA400 Was Undersized for the Gate — We Changed the Arm, Not the System

A heavy iron swing gate the existing LA400 arm could not carry. Upgraded to the heavy-duty LA500 arm alone — the control board and control box were fine and stayed exactly where they were.

The problem

A residential iron swing gate had a LiftMaster LA400 arm operator fitted to it, and the operator was struggling. The LA400 is a capable unit, but it is rated for a certain gate weight and leaf length — and this gate, a solid arched wrought iron leaf, was beyond what that arm was built to move.

An operator working past its rating does not usually fail cleanly on day one. It labours on every cycle, runs hot, and works through its own components faster than it should, until something gives out. Replacing like for like at that point simply restarts the same clock.

How we diagnosed it

  1. We released the operator and moved the gate by hand first, as we do on every call, to rule out the far more common cause — a gate that has become hard to move through worn hinges or a shifted post. This gate swung freely. Nothing was binding.
  2. That is what pointed at specification rather than a fault. The gate was in good order and the arm was simply not rated to carry it, which is a sizing problem from the original installation rather than something that had gone wrong since.
  3. We then checked what else was in the system. The control board and the control box were both in good condition and correctly wired, and the LA500 runs on the same control platform as the LA400 — so the electronics did not need to be part of this job at all.

What we did

  1. We fitted the heavy-duty LA500 arm in place of the LA400. That is a straight mechanical upgrade to the component that was actually undersized.
  2. The existing control board, control box, wiring and mounting all stayed. They were serviceable and compatible, so replacing them would have added cost to the invoice without adding anything to the gate.
  3. Limits were re-learned for the new arm and the gate was run through repeated full cycles to confirm it was travelling comfortably rather than at the edge of what the operator could manage.

The outcome

The gate now opens and closes on an operator rated for its actual weight, with the original control system retained — the customer paid for the arm, not for a new installation.

What you should take from this

When a gate operator cannot manage its gate, the honest question is whether the whole system is wrong or just one part of it. Here it was the arm, and the LA400 and LA500 share a control platform, so the board and box carried straight over. Quoting a full replacement would have been easier to write and considerably more expensive to accept — and the customer would have paid to remove electronics that had nothing wrong with them.
